Filming Milan for Bloomberg Media Studios
I was commissioned by Bloomberg Media Studios to film a project in Milan for Holcim, focusing on sustainable transit and urban infrastructure. The work centered on the city’s new M4 metro line and its role in reducing emissions and improving mobility. The project was not about promotion, but about observation. It looked at how infrastructure shapes daily life and how long-term planning can support a more sustainable city.
Milan’s M4 Line and the Question of Emissions
At the core of the film is the Milan M4 metro line, a key piece of infrastructure designed to connect the city more efficiently while lowering its environmental impact. Filming along the line made it clear how closely mobility, architecture, and climate responsibility are linked. Rather than explaining these ideas through commentary, the film lets the spaces and movement speak for themselves.
A Documentary View on Construction and Design
Beyond transit, the film also looks at construction and material choices. Holcim’s approach to sustainable building and the engineering work by Webuild form an important backdrop. These elements appear quietly in the film, grounded in real locations and real use. My role was to translate these processes into images that feel clear and human, without adding unnecessary layers.
Working Between Seoul and Milan
Coming to Milan from Seoul always sharpens my perspective. Different cities ask similar questions but answer them in their own way. Milan’s balance between historical layers and new infrastructure made it a strong setting for this story. The collaboration itself reflected that exchange. Teams from different countries worked toward a shared goal, using film as a common language.
Closing Thoughts
This project became more than a documentation of a transit line. It was an opportunity to look at how cities can move toward a net-zero future without losing their identity. For me, it reinforced why I’m drawn to films about space, movement, and the systems we live inside. The result is a quiet, observational piece that reflects Milan’s ongoing transformation and the broader responsibility cities face today.
