Moonchild and Genero Recognition
The music video for Moonchild by M83 received recognition at Genero. After being shortlisted as a finalist, the video was later selected as one of five runner-ups in Genero’s Best of the Year competition in 2013. This recognition reflects the shared effort behind the project. It highlights how music, image, and narrative came together through a collaborative process based in Seoul.
Developing the Music Video
Moonchild follows a simple story. A young girl imagines herself in outer space. When she faces danger, she responds with calm and control rather than fear. The narrative stays minimal and leaves space for interpretation. From the start, the goal was not to explain the story in detail. Instead, the images follow the mood and rhythm of the song and allow the visuals to remain open.
Working with Space and Design
An important part of the project was the collaboration with interior designer Will Craig from Discursive Form. His approach to space and structure shaped how the sets functioned within the film. By combining architecture and cinematography, the environments became active elements rather than backdrops. This helped ground the sci-fi setting in physical space.
About the Music
Moonchild sits within M83’s wider body of work, known for its blend of dream pop, electronic, and ambient sound. The track provided a strong emotional base for the film. Rather than working against the music, the images follow its pace and tone. This approach keeps the video closely tied to the song.
Making the Film in Seoul
The project was developed through CONTENTED. Working in Seoul shaped both the production process and the collaboration. Music videos like Moonchild allow space for experimentation. They offer a chance to explore visual ideas while staying focused on mood and rhythm.
The Essence of Seoul’s Cinematic Craft
Being selected as a runner-up in Genero’s Best of the Year marked an important moment for the project. More than an award, it acknowledged the work of everyone involved. Moonchild remains a film built on trust, collaboration, and restraint. It reflects an ongoing interest in storytelling that leaves room for imagination rather than answers.
