Overview

As an award-winning filmmaker Based in Korea, I co-directed the short film In Flux together with Udo Lee on Jeju Island. The project explores the idea of an intercultural couple attempting to create an elixir that transcends language barriers and allows for telepathic communication. The narrative moves between symbolic gesture and grounded observation, reflecting themes of migration, connection, and cultural distance.

The landscape of Jeju Island, South Korea, became more than a backdrop; it shaped the rhythm and tone of the piece. Volcanic terrain, open coastlines, and shifting weather conditions informed both pacing and composition. Rather than relying on dialogue, the film leans on image and atmosphere.

This was a personal project developed as a director duo. In addition to co-directing, I worked as cinematographer, editor, and colorist. That continuity from production through post allowed for a consistent visual language. The camera approach remained restrained and tactile, focusing on proximity and subtle physical detail rather than overt symbolism.

In Flux was commissioned by the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art for the group exhibition Moving & Migration. The exhibition was presented in 2019 at both the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in Ansan, South Korea, and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Within that curatorial framework, the film sits between documentary and fiction.

As an award-winning filmmaker working between Jeju and mainland Korea, this project reflects my broader interest in stories shaped by movement and cultural transition. The work remains quiet in tone, allowing viewers space to interpret the emotional core of the film without direct explanation.
