Overview

The Korean episode of Beauty and the Feast follows three women whose lives reveal very different, but equally powerful, stories about food, identity, and tradition. At the heart is Shoogi, a social media celebrity whose Mukbang broadcasts have earned her a huge online following. Her story sheds light on the growing world of digital performance, where eating becomes both a livelihood and a cultural phenomenon.

The film also introduces Ko Ryou-Jin, a young mother who has returned to her roots as a Haenyeo, one of Korea’s female divers. In her story, we see how generational traditions are passed on, blending physical endurance and heritage with the demands of modern family life. We also meet Vivian Kim, a plus-size model whose story confronts Korea’s strict ideals of beauty. Through her, the film highlights ongoing debates about confidence, identity, and empowerment.

As Director of Photography hired by Singaporean production company Freeflow, we followed these women in their everyday lives, capturing both the intimacy of their personal reflections and the visual richness of their environments. Our aim was to bring each story to the screen with honesty and sensitivity, allowing viewers to connect with the humor, struggle, and resilience that define these remarkable women.
