OVERVIEW

IN NOVEMBER 2012 I SPENT 5 DAYS IN PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA, SHOOTING A SHORT DOCUMENTARY ABOUT A UNIQUE VISIT OF THE MUNICH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (MKO) TO PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA. IN ADDITION TO JOINT ORCHESTRA REHEARSALS AT THE PYONGYANG KIM WON GYUN CONSERVATORY, THE MKO CONDUCTED ONE-TO-ONE CHAMBER MUSIC CLASSES WITH NORTH KOREAN STUDENTS. AFTER 3 DAYS OF REHEARSALS THE GERMAN-KOREAN ENSEMBLE PERFORMED IN A CLOSING CONCERT AT THE CONSERVATORY. THE GOETHE INSTITUT KOREA ARRANGED THIS CROSS-CULTURAL ENCOUNTER TO ONE OF THE MOST INTERNATIONALLY ISOLATED PLACES IN THE WORLD. I WAS COMMISSIONED AS A PHOTOGRAPHER AND FILMMAKER TO JOIN THIS TRIP TO NORTH KOREA TOGETHER WITH THE GOETHE INSTITUT BASED IN SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA. THIS IS A SERIES I TOOK OF THE MEMBERS OF THE MUNICH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA. BELOW YOU CAN FIND A LINK TO THE DOCUMENTARY TITLED “ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE NORTH” WHICH WAS THE MAIN ASSIGNMENT I WAS WORKING ON WHILE BEING IN PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA.
