Moonchild by M83: A Music Video Project from Seoul

A Story Set in Outer Space

The music video for Moonchild begins with a simple idea. A young girl dreams of traveling into outer space. Once she arrives, she faces hostile aliens. Instead of fighting them with force, she turns the situation around using a ray gun that transforms danger into rhythm and calm.

I worked on this project through CONTENTED, together with filmmaker Neil Dowling. We developed the video in Seoul and approached it as a short visual story rather than a traditional performance-driven music video.

Developing the Music Video

We created the music video for “Moonchild” by M83 with a clear focus on atmosphere and imagination. From the beginning, the goal was to translate the dreamlike quality of the song into a visual journey.

Because of that, the narrative stays simple. The girl’s dream becomes the structure of the film. Scene by scene, it moves deeper into a world shaped by light, movement, and rhythm rather than explanation.

Designing the World

An important part of the project was the collaboration with architect and interior designer Will Craig of Discursive Form. He designed the main location where the video was filmed. His work is also known from projects such as Seoul’s Club Mute.

From early on, we worked closely to connect architecture and cinematography. As a result, the set did not act as a background. Instead, it became an active part of the story and helped shape the feeling of outer space.

Recognition and Response

After its release, “Moonchild” received recognition from Genero. This acknowledgment meant a lot to everyone involved. It reflected the strength of the collaboration rather than any single contribution.

Moreover, it showed how music, design, and filmmaking can come together in a shared visual language, even within a short format like a music video.

Working with M83’s Music

M83’s music played a central role in shaping the film. Their sound blends dream pop, electronic, and ambient elements, which gave us space to work visually. “Moonchild” already carries a strong sense of movement and emotion, so our task was to listen closely and respond to it.

Instead of adding complexity, we focused on clarity. The images follow the music and allow it to lead the experience.

A Seoul-Based Collaboration

For me, this project reflects the kind of work I value as a filmmaker based in Seoul. It brings together different disciplines and keeps the process collaborative from start to finish.

I am grateful to everyone who contributed their time and ideas to “Moonchild.” It remains a project that captures a shared moment of trust, curiosity, and creative exchange.
