OVERVIEW

ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE NORTH IS A SHORT DOCUMENTARY ABOUT A UNIQUE VISIT OF THE MUNICH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (MKO) TO PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA. IN ADDITION TO JOINT ORCHESTRA REHEARSALS AT THE PYONGYANG KIM WON GYUN CONSERVATORY, THE MKO CONDUCTED ONE-TO-ONE CHAMBER MUSIC CLASSES WITH NORTH KOREAN STUDENTS.

AFTER 3 DAYS OF REHEARSALS THE GERMAN-KOREAN ENSEMBLE PERFORMED IN A CLOSING CONCERT AT THE CONSERVATORY. THE GOETHE INSTITUT KOREA ARRANGED THIS CROSS-CULTURAL ENCOUNTER TO ONE OF THE MOST INTERNATIONALLY ISOLATED PLACES IN THE WORLD. I WAS INVITED FROM SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, AS A DIRECTOR / CINEMATOGRAPHER TO JOIN AND DOCUMENT THIS SPECIAL EVENT IN FORM OF A SHORT DOCUMENTARY.

THIS FILM HAS BEEN AWARDED WITH A VIMEO STAFF PICK AND HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR THE GERMAN WEB VIDEO AWARD IN 2013.
