Global Cell Phone Usage Unveiled: A Cinematographer’s Perspective from Seoul

In collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), M ss ng P eces, and Co.MISSION Content, I embarked on a fascinating journey to Shenzhen, China. Our mission? To create a captivating video that delves into the diverse ways people across the globe use cell phones. As a cinematographer based in Seoul, South Korea, this project allowed me to witness firsthand the unique dynamics of a mall with a consumer base actively seeking hacked phones.

Unveiling Cross-Cultural Cell Phone Behaviors

As a cinematographer in Seoul, I was privileged to work alongside the brilliant minds of Bunnie Huang and Kevin Salvin. Our exploration centered on the role of the phone in 21st-century communication, shaping interactions for the hand, eye, and mind. The resulting video, produced in 2015, received acclaim as a Vimeo Staff Pick. It is also part of a series created in collaboration with MIT Media Lab for the Knotty Objects Summit. I played a crucial role in capturing the essence of the Shenzhen segment of this film.

The MIT Media Lab: A Hub of Innovation

Delving deeper, the MIT Media Lab stands as a hub for interdisciplinary research, seamlessly integrating technology, media, science, art, and design. From neurobiology to socially engaging robots, the lab’s research spans diverse domains. Founded in 1985 by Nicholas Negroponte and Jerome Wiesner, the lab has been a pioneer in pushing boundaries. This reflects in its architectural marvel, the Wiesner Building.

However, it’s essential to acknowledge the lab’s commitment to addressing challenges. The scrutiny in 2019 prompted introspection, resulting in leadership changes and a renewed dedication to ethical practices. With Dava Newman as the new director, the lab poises for a future marked by innovation and accountability.
